i want to start reading poetry or books that makes your mind think "wow"
Can’t go wrong with the Romantics if you’re looking for imagination. Go with Keats, I’d say.
If you want more modern stuff, hit the Bukowski or the Ginsberg.

Edgar Allan Poe
Emily Dickinson
Robert Frost (kinda…)
and my favorite…
Langston Hughes
Edgar Allan Poe and Langston Hughes are probably my two favorite. Langston Hughes isn’t really that well know, but he is an amazing poet. Try Googling him. I hope this helps!

Sylvia Plath ?
She’s not really ‘historical’ (she died in the early 1960s) but her poetry is just beautiful. Her novel, ‘The Bell Jar’ is also really good.

Dante, especially his Inferno, is at the top of the list. Although it’s written in 1200 century vernacular Tuscan there are many good English translations of it. I’m Florentine and if I give my thumbs up to these translations it must be true.
Another powerful highly rated historical poet is Rumi who was a Persian scolar, poet and philosopher. I personally I haven’t read his poetry but I’ ve heard good praises of his poetry and been impressed by some of his prose.

I’d go with another poster and suggest Rumi. I have read a lot of his stuff and find it opens windows in my mind.
I’d also recommend a book called Women who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes; it makes the world a different place when you’ve read it and my own understanding of my own life and path changes.
